Post-Holiday Furniture Cleaning Tips

Post-Holiday Furniture Cleaning Tips

It’s that time of the year when you bring out the silverware, cook numerous delicious dishes, and invite family and friends over to your home to enjoy the holiday festivities together. However, all this holiday fun also means that your home is going to be quite messy at the end of the day, whether it’s because of stains from children spilling juices or glass rings on your furniture. But worry not—here are some helpful tips that will make post-holiday cleaning much easier for you!

First, Declutter

Before you start any cleaning, it is important to declutter the entire house. Cluttered rooms make the house look dirtier, and cleaning becomes more difficult and time-consuming. Try sorting out the extra clutter in a separate trash bag, so your house looks less messy. Decluttering also gives you the opportunity to reorganize items on different shelves and cabinets according to their importance.

Kitchen Countertops and Shelves

As you have been baking, grilling, and cooking for weeks, your kitchen must have accumulated a lot of food particles, grease, and dust, which will require thorough cleaning. You need to wipe down your kitchen countertops so that no grime remains. You also need to wipe down all the shelves, cabinets, and drawers after taking out the dishes and other essentials.

To remove stubborn grime, mix one teaspoon of dish soap solution with two quarts of water in a bucket, and then, with a sponge or soft cloth, clean the kitchen furniture.

Vacuum Your Sofa or Any Other Fabric Furniture

Generally, fabric furniture tends to collect the most dirt and sweat, so you should vacuum it thoroughly inside, outside, and on all other sides. This will get rid of any hair, dust, and errant dirt. Remove and clean your cushions as well. Keep the sofas and armchairs in a sunlit and airy place for at least 24 hours before putting freshly-washed covers on them again.

Removing Stubborn Stains from Wooden Furniture

Stickers or Glue Residue

When decorating your home for the holidays, there is a real chance that you could accidentally get glue on your furniture. Use a plastic scrapper or even the edge of a credit card to loosen as much of the sticky residue as possible. If this doesn’t work, put some olive or mineral oil on a soft cloth and then rub it on these stains. Take another cleaner part of this cloth, reapply more oil and rub again for a neater finish.

Water Ring Marks

Marks left by wet glasses and cups on wooden surfaces are beyond your control when hosting a holiday party. Try wiping them as soon as possible. But if it has been there for some time, you can either rub some olive oil or mayonnaise into the ring-marked area of the wood or put some non-gel toothpaste on a soft cloth and use it to wipe down the water ring until it disappears. Also, remember to wipe off the residues with a damp cloth and then again with a soft dry cloth.
